Eco Tech: Swedish researchers recycle citrus waste into alternative fuel

Eco Factor: Citrus waste recycled into biogas and ethanol.

Researchers in different parts of the world recycle organic waste into alternative fuel that can power our lives in a better way. However, unlike other forms of organic waste, composing citrus waste isn’t possible, as it contains an antibacterial substance which slows its breakdown.

However, with thousands of tons of citrus waste produced each year, researchers at the University of Borås in Sweden were in search of ways citrus waste can be utilized, minimizing its impact on the environment. These researchers have now developed a method to produce four products from citrus waste that include linon, an antibacterial agent, pectin, a gelling agent used in food products, and most importantly biogas and ethanol that can both be used as fuel for heat and power.
