Eco Factor: Naturally insulated night shelters generate solar energy.
With over 100,000 homeless people in Delhi, the government sets up night shelters each winter. However, the plans for this winter are different. This year’s shelters will include aesthetically-designed bamboo houses that will not only insulate the occupants but also generate solar energy for nighttime illumination.
The shelters were conceptualized by Indo-Global Social Service Society (IGSSS) and designed by Micro Home Solutions. These portable shelters can accommodate around 100 people and can be assembled in just four days.
The shelters are made up of porta cabins, and the idea behind them was to create clean and respectable accommodation for the homeless. The bamboo shelters feature a PV-clad roof that stores energy during the day and uses it to provide light after dark. Moreover, the shelters will have a mechanism to elevate the roof, which will allow the shelters to be naturally ventilated.
