Eco Factor: Newly developed technology makes OLEDs up to five times more efficient.
Organic Light Emitting Diodes, or simply OLEDs, have started a new revolution electronics and displays, as they don’t essentially require a backlight to function, which helps manufacturers develop brighter, more energy-efficient and slimmer displays. As great as the technology might sound to environmentalists, there is always some room for improvement. Researchers over at SRI International have found a way to boost the energy-efficiency of OLEDs with a new design that incorporates regularly placed cavities which generate as much as five times the output of a standard OLED using the same amount of energy.
The technology, known as COLED, is based on a combination of light-emitting polymers developed by Japan-based SDK, with which researchers were able to obtain an output of 30 lumens per watt for blue light, and 80 lumens per watt for green light.
The researchers believe that this new device is also great for the environmental point of view, as it is two times more energy-efficient than CFLs and also eliminates the use of mercury, which presents a disposal problem.
