Eco Factor: An energy efficient, interactive LED display system providing safer traffic and subways.

We all are so accustomed to watch our dull black shadows that we seldom watch our own black ghosts follow us. People walking though the pedestrian tunnel in Sandnes Sentrum, however, have a different experience with their shadows. Unlike anywhere else on the planet, shadows in this tunnel glow brightly.

These glowing shadows come courtesy of “The Strømer,” which is an interactive LED display wall. Developed by Stig Skjelvik and Snøhetta architects in collaboration with Prototyper AS and Rasmus Hildonen, the display is based on a prototype interactive LED system developed by Stig Skjelvik, in which LEDs are activated by motion. Merging such displays creates a wall that illuminates according to the visual input that is fed into it, which in this case is – “Shadows.” This technology not only provides a visual treat to the passerby but also makes sure that the lighting is activated only when someone crosses in front of the screen, that is only when it’s needed most.

The Dark Side:

The display makes use of LEDs which are energy efficient, but all the electricity that the system needs still comes from conventional sources. The display would have been better if the electricity needed for the system to run came from some renewable energy source.
