Eco Gadgets: Bottle Light says no to batteries and yes to air

Eco Factor: Air-powered emergency light concept.

The recent developments in portable gadget technology are credited to the advent of smaller, lighter and power-efficient batteries and cells. No matter how cheap or how efficient, once discarded the toxic chemicals these batteries are made of end up entering the food chain, by mixing with underground freshwater reserves. Industrial designers Jia Peng, Cheng Peng and Wang Dong Dong are envisioning a battery-free electronics era, which depends on clean and plentiful air for power.

These designers have developed a concept emergency lighting system known as the Bottle Light. Simply replace a plastic water bottle’s cap with the Bottle Light and you’re good to go. The light works on compressed air which is produced when the user presses the bottle repeatedly. On pressing the bottle, compressed air moves a small piston, which the Bottle Light is equipped with. This piston converts mechanical motion into electricity, which finally powers the LED light incorporated in the system.

The Dark Side:

The system seems too complicated, and we doubt that such a system can actually fit into a package as small as a water-bottle cap.
