Eco Factor: Fuel-efficient hybrid car runs on biodiesel.
Teenage students at West Philadelphia High School are working on a project not many school-going kids would even dream of doing. The team has built a biodiesel/electric hybrid car, with which they hope to win the $10 million Automotive X-Prize.
The car, dubbed Hybrid Attack, is a stylish and streamlined sports car that can go from zero to 60mph in just four seconds. The student team is the only high school competitor in a field of about 90 teams from different parts of the world.
The competition requires entrants to build cars that can do at least 100 miles per gallon, can be mass produced and are safe and reliable. While the 90 member field will be reduced to about half on October 19, the final winner will be decided in 2010.
