Eco Factor: New office building of 3M generates solar energy for power.
MC Architects have designed a new 10,300-square-meter office building for 3M, which is located on the outskirts of Milan in the Pioltello district. The linear building is the first to be built on the site as part of a master plan by MC Architects in 2005.
The linear building is 105m long and has a terraced form stepping down from five to two floors. The orientation of the building allows for better environmental control, with the east and west facades designed with special glazing and shading systems. The south face of the building carries a series of terraces that provide a shaded outdoor space for the employees.
In addition to providing shade, the south face also protects the building from the extremes of climate during both winter and summer. The building is also equipped with photovoltaic panels that generate electricity for the building and also provide a shimmering touch of green to the building.
