Eco Factor: Hybrid yacht uses solar and wind energy to produce hydrogen.
The N-DOUR, by designer Riccardo Pilurzu, is a yacht design with multiple purposes. The design was created with the idea of developing a luxurious yacht that will sustain itself for a longer period of time out at sea. By relying less on fossil fuels, this vessel has the possibility to utilize environmentally-friendly energy sources to either propel itself or create electricity for other uses.
After researching on various renewable sources, Riccardo discovered that the amount of energy generated by solar and wind power will not satisfy the massive yacht. The idea of creating a hybrid system is more realistic, which consists of a system that harvests renewable energy to create more energy, therefore having a fully renewable propulsion system.
The idea is to utilize wind and solar energy to create hydrogen which will later propel the yacht with a hydrogen power plant. N-DOUR has another trick up its sleeves, when the vessel is docked in the harbor and no electricity is been consumed by the vessel, the yacht will start producing energy for the harbor, therefore providing clean energy to the grid.
Another feature that will maximize energy harvesting, is the use of solar panels in the windows. Utilizing covalent solar concentrators, the energy from the sun will enter the windows, which is then channeled to its edges or perimeter where it will be harvested in a more efficient manner.
