Eco Cars: MIT working on an electric car that charges in 10 minutes

Eco Factor: Zero-emission electric car doesn’t make its owner wait for hours for a recharge.

While car manufacturers are trying hard to develop technology that would enable cars to recharge in minutes rather than hours, researchers over at MIT might have the answers. A team at MIT is working on an electric car that would recharge in just ten minutes, which is not much more than the time it takes to get your car refueled with gasoline.

The team is trying to get all that technology under the hood of a Mercury Milan, which would be able to go from 0 to 60 in 9 seconds and have a range of around 200 miles on a single “ten-minute” recharge. However, unlike the electric cars of today, this fast-charging car won’t be charged from a conventional wall socket, but will actually need 350KW of power and charging stations that are able to provide 356V and 1000A. Another downside of the technology is the cost of the battery pack, which presently costs $80,000, but the team is hoping that full scale production will lower the cost to more-reasonable levels.
