Eco Factor: Trabant gets an electric engine for zero emissions.

The Trabant, often recognized as a symbol of East German industrial failings by some and the worst car ever made by others, is hoping to wipe the slate clean with an all electric version of the car dubbed Trabant nT.

While the production of the unreliable car ceased nearly two decades ago, two German companies are stepping forward to find investors to bring a recouped version of the car on the road by 2012. The car is equipped with a 45KW asynchronous motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. The car is touted to have a top range of 100 miles and a speed of 80mph.

Recharging the car isn’t as fast as some other vehicles launched on the same platform boast of, but an overnight recharge won’t cost you more than 1€. If the vehicle ever reaches the production line, it could be made available for about $29,000.
