Eco Factor: Observation tower harnesses solar energy for electricity.

XTEN Architecture’s entry to the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Competition in Dubai has been designed according to the traditional Islamic geometric patterns found in Dubai’s decorative arts. The ZPO (Za’abeel Park Observation) Tower is designed to showcase the richness of Islamic art in a form that is suitable for the environment as well. Apart from serving the purpose it is actually designed for, the base of the tower carries four distinct landforms that provide space for parking, conference center, children’s library and service areas.

These platforms are rendered with Islamic patterns in the form of grasses and plantings at a large scale. The architects envisioned the observation tower to be built with zero-energy characteristics, which was accomplished by installing several hundred square meters of photovoltaic systems that convert the top of the tower into a renewable energy powerhouse.

The main program areas are located below landforms with green roofs, which apart from adding a pinch of green in the design reduce solar gain as well. These program areas will be cooled and ventilated using geothermal cooling systems. The entire building will be made from recycled materials and the water consumed would also be recycled, which becomes an utmost necessity considering that the towers are to be built in Dubai.
