Corn makeover: Lab-produced, non-pollinating male sterile corn to prevent cross-breeding

Here is a biopharmaceutical corn getting a makeover in the lab! The corn is being developed into a new variety that keeps the therapeutic protein, eliminating the pollen. To do this, the researchers are using traditional breeding.

Thanks to the Iowa State University researchers. With this finding, keep the traditional corn varieties away from getting pollinated. The researchers are developing a male sterile corn and it carries the transgene. Since, these corn plants do not produce pollen, the new biopharmaceutical variety could be grown safely in the corn-producing states.

Kendall Lamkey, interim chair of agronomy and Pioneer Distinguished Chair in Maize Breeding said,

Pollen movement is the issue… And that’s the most controllable part of the corn production system.
