Chandigarh: India’s ‘City Beautiful’ becomes greenest city too

chandigarh is green like this everywhereThe ‘City Beautiful’ of India – Chandigarh, has added another feather to its cap — becoming the greenest city of the country. 35.5 percent of the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, which are 114-sq km in area, is covered with forest and trees, the latest findings of the forest department reveal. And this green cover is claimed to be the highest for any city in India.

Designed in the early 1950s by the French architect Le Corbusier, the city is credited with having the large variety of trees, planted when the city was in its infancy and in the last 15 years, over 2.2 million tree saplings of various varieties were planted, claims the Chandigarh administration’s forest and wildlife department and the local municipal corporation’s horticulture wing.
