New computer Model boosts accuracy of extreme weather forecasting

The day-to-day weather forecasting for both civilian and military-operational use have been boosted with the introduction of an advanced forecasting model that is capable of predicting several types of extreme weather.

The new high-resolution computer model — Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) is the first model to serve both the nation’s public weather forecasts as well as for the cutting-edge weather research.

A partnership including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and more than 150 other organizations and universities in the United States and abroad have created this unique and improved weather forecasting model.
