Eco Factor: Eco-friendly car powered by methane gas produced from human waste.
A team of British engineers has developed a methane gas-powered car that goes by the name “Bio-Bug”. This green vehicle is claimed to be Britain’s first car to run on methane gas without its performance being reduced. It is powered by biogas, which is produced from human waste at sewage works across the country. This 2 litre VW Beetle convertible has been modified to run on not only conventional fuel, but also compressed methane gas.
Initially the Bio-Bug runs by using unleaded petrol but automatically switches to methane when the engine heats up. Capable of reaching top speed of 114mph, this green car runs 5.3 miles per cubic meter of biogas. GENeco, the sustainable energy firm behind the car claims that just one sewage works could power 95,400,000 miles per year, saving 19,000 tonnes of CO2. This poo-powered car can travel 10,000 miles by the power derived from sewage collected from just 70 homes.
