Art created from discarded woolens aims to raise green awareness

We have seen many eco artists who have produced spectacular pieces of art from materials that are junk for the rest of us. This reuse not only reduces waste, but also ensures that instead of entering landfills as junk, these products grace art galleries. Meliors Simms is one such artist for whom old woolens are perfect raw materials to create art that in some way can raise awareness about the need to protect our planet and its resources.

Craft : Meliors Simms – textiles

Meliors uses products such as old woolen blankets to create artwork representing oil spills, toxic dumps melting glaciers and other such disasters, which our planet is dealing due to the lack of awareness. Creating each sculpture takes a large amount of time and dedication as each of them is hand cut and stitched manually. The artist states that the inspiration to produce art came from her parents, as her mother is a printmaker and her father a poet. Melior strives for is unflinching beauty and all her efforts are diverted to ensure she art work speaks for itself. Having learnt to sew from her mother, Melior does make changes in her chosen techniques and doesn’t use the same technique for different artworks.

It’s great to read that there is no dearth of creative designers and artists who are making use of waste products to create innovative sculptures of a variety of forms. These sculptures not only make us believe that waste can be recycled in many different ways, but also instills awareness among the masses as the waste we produce everyday is having an effect on the delicate eco system, on which our existence depends.
