Treetops@Punggol: Singapore’s first eco-friendly housing project

We discussed yesterday that developing single solar powered homes might not be the right idea to go green in a much broader sense, for that we require green and energy-efficient towers and complexes. SOLARA is one such project coming up in California.

Now it’s the turn of Singapore to go green. The Singapore Housing and Development Board has unleashed designs for what will be the first eco-friendly residential project on the island. The project will be known as the Treetops@Punggol. This project is the greenest that we have come across till date.

In Singapore more than 80% residents prefer to live in HDB apartments and they all will soon be able to taste the green revolution. The plan comprises of seven 16-story towers with community garden areas surrounding them. These towers will make use of multiple green technologies like solar panels on tower tops, roof gardens and grey water recycling systems for effective energy.

The eco-deck around the towers will absorb heat and also provide shade to joggers. The children’s playground will be made from recycled material. The street lights will be powered by solar panels that will be installed on top of the roofs. This only will account for about 80% energy saving. These next-gen towers will also make use of water-recycling systems and rainwater collection systems, which will provide an estimated 130,000 gallons of water that will finally be used for outdoor cleaning.

All apartments in the tower will be green and will reuse water to flush toilets. They will also feature centralized chutes for recyclable materials. What would be really great to see is the price tag of these apartments. Stay tuned for more info.
