British wish to go all Green

annual greenhouse gas emissions

British authorities are seeing red over the fact that the country is unable to achieve the targets set in reduction of greenhouse gases. British Gas warns the nation that its inability to reduce Carbon dioxide content released into the atmosphere would lead to grave consequences. London is considered as the major culprit in this regard.

Now we all know how the British are so fond of their heritage & sometimes drag it to an unimaginable extent that it infuriates those who see the bigger perspective. The latest problem that British authorities have had to deal with is no different. A statistical study suggests that for every 3pounds spent on heating a room 1pound is wasted. In other words, the British seem to waste one-third of the energy they spend on home-warming systems. Now that to me, sounds like a considerably huge chunk of energy being flushed down the gutter. What a waste indeed!

Experts attribute this huge waste of energy to the fact that most homes in London are poorly insulated & this is a direct derivative of the fact that the structures are too old. As the tradition loving city sleeps over these facts, much energy is wasted. Hence the authorities started “Green Streets” concept. It promotes awareness among people & provides solutions. The project is aimed at reducing the release of gases that contribute to global warming. It is a novel initiative that intends to wake up a sleeping city.

The project has selected eight households in each of the Green Streets located in Manchester, Leeds, London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Plymouth and Southampton, to take part in a challenge. Each street is given 30,000 pounds to spend on energy saving devices. The street that reduces its carbon dioxide emissions the most wins 50,000 pounds worth of energy saving equipment. Now, that is truly a committed initiative. London better take a look at itself. If it is too caught up in its past, then there might not be a future left for it!!
