Horse Dung to produce electricity!

horse dung to produce electricity

Wellington in Florida is in news this season not for its equestrian sports show but for a much larger problem. No prizes for guessing, its The Horse Dung!

To tackle piles and piles of horse dung, villagers in Florida have come up with a brilliant idea.

Convert the dung into electricity.

With a population of over 9000 horses, disposal and use of 100 tons of horse dung a day had become a major concern for the village council.

Now, an enclosed power plant in about 3.5 acres of land near Wellington’s waste water treatment plant is being planned.

The $10 million plant will be able to burn about 130 tons of horse dung each day.

The steam generated in the burning process will power the turbine generator which in turn will produce about 24 megawatts of electricity each day.

This electricity could optionally be sold to Florida Power and Light.

The plant will be designed in such a way that it will contain the smell and noise of the whole process.

Wellington’s Village council has initiated talks with Wellington Energy LLC to learn more about the entire process.

Wellington Energy LLC has done a similar project in Pennsylvania in partnership with Spinheat Ltd. of Fairfield, Conn.
