ARPA-E grants funds to develop technology for wind power storage

compressed air technology can store wind power

Eco Factor: New technology stores energy from wind power using isothermal compression.

US federal agency ARPA-E has awarded a grant worth up to $750,000 to a startup called General Compression to conduct research on transformative energy technology. The money would be channelized into developing a new technology for storing energy from wind power using isothermal compression.

Under this process, wind energy would be used to run the compressors which draw out heat from the compressed air instead of burning fuel. The compressed air can be stored in the same types of geological structures that store natural gas. The company has earmarked its system as General Compression’s Advanced Energy Storage (GCAES), and has partnered on the project with ConocoPhillips.
