Eco Factor: Temporary installation to be made using recycled PVC.
BIG Architects believe that building something new in order to tear it down a couple of months later is an epitome of excess and wastefulness. Rather than building temporary installations from new materials, BIG has proposed an installation from recycled PVC, which can be used for three months before being torn down.
Dubbed P.S.1, the installation consists of 99.9 percent air and is formed as a cloud-like landscape for playing, relaxing and dancing. The installation also includes seating, playgrounds, water, shade and light. The material used for the development comes from recycled truck bed covers and bags, reducing environmental impact by 80 percent on average.
The cloudscape is continuous from the entrance to the courtyard, forming a bubbly dune in the rectangular courtyard. It also includes a mega air mattress for play and physical activity and a paddling pool surrounded by bouncy seating. The cloudscape is composed of spheres of two different sizes made from a composition of triangulated S-shapes.
After deflation, at the end of the season, the S-shapes can be folded into Manhattan Portage Bags with each bag given a unique number that is printed on the fabric along with the pattern and folding instructions. The bags can be sold as numbered fragments of the total piece – P.S.1 out of 7295.
