Use Designer Switches to teach your kids about Energy Conservation

This would be an incredibly fun way to teach your kids the importance of conserving energy by switching off the electronic appliances in the house when they don’t need them, including lights and fans. The Tio is designed by Tim Holley, and is a light switch shaped like a ghost. When switched on, Tio remains green and smiling for some time, while slowly turning a shade of yellow and giving off a shocked look after four hours. And after 8 hours, if Tio still happens to be on, you would find him in a deep red color, scowling at you for forgetting to switch him off. But that’s not all. Tio collects the information from the switch in its specially designed computer program. The amount of energy saved by the family as a whole is then depicted in the form of a tree that grows bigger and healthier with more energy conservation.

Dance to generate Electricity

Talk about generating electricity and actually enjoying the entire process! A disco pub called the So Bar Surya in London has designed a specially modified dance floor for the purpose of generating electricity while guests dance on it. The floor has been fitted with springs which are compressed when danced upon, thus creating enough electricity to power most of the lights in the club. Andrew Charalambous has proclaimed that the generated electricity is stored in batteries, and is used to power nearly 60% of the club’s total energy needs.

Use Wasted Water to Grow Plants

Montreal designer Jean Michael Gauvreau came up with a brainstorm of an idea to use waste water from sinks to water plants. Called the Zen Garden, Jean’s design comprises of a stained concrete sink with a special channel that lets water from the drain flow into a small garden located at its base. So while you wash your hands, you would actually be watering your plants. Don’t worry though, for there is a special drain midway in the channel to filter out the soapy grime that accompanies washing your hands with soap.

Gather on a Green Roof

Talk about converting an entire building into a giant green gathering place. The School of Art, Design and Media in Singapore has actually done this by converting the entire roof of the 5 story facility into one giant vegetated landscape. The grass covered roofs create plenty of open space, harvest rainwater, insulate the building and cool the interiors well. They can also  be used as gathering places for group discussions  and studies.
