While it may be hard to completely switch to a plant-based diet, you could still choose to reduce your meat and dairy consumption. According to the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), meat and dairy specifically accounts for around 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, it’s definitely worth having a hard look at what you eat if you’re worried about the state of our planet. You could start with having meatless Mondays, it’s a great way to slowly reduce the amount of meat you consume, you may even surprise yourself and switch to veganism.
3. Drive less
With the current situation, you may not be using your car as much. As stated by the Global, road transport activity was almost 50% below the 2019 average by the end of March 2020. There is no doubt that Covid-19 has completely changed our behaviours in terms of transport but how does it affect the environment? Well, according to scientists, the daily global emissions of CO2 fell by 17% at the peak of the shutdown. Ideally, it would be great to keep up that momentum once we are allowed to travel again.
It may be an obvious statement, but recycling is a key activity to reduce greenhouse emissions and therefore fight climate change. First of all, you need to be aware of the different types of plastic you have in your home and what each recycling symbol relates to. For better recycling practises make sure you always flatten boxes, squash plastic bottles and rinse away all residual food waste left in the packaging.
