CAES(Compressed Air Energy Strage Technology/圧縮空気エネルギー貯蔵技術)を使い、そのプロセスをより効率的なものにしようとしています。

LightSail Energy Could Make Compressed Air Grid-Scale Storage Work

Currently, pumped hydro is the most economic energy storage method, being able to release 70 to75 percent of the energy that’s stored. The problem lies in the fact that it needs specialized geography in order to meet its full potential. This can be a problem if the area where it’s to be used isn’t specific enough.

LightSail Energy has devised a system that harnesses both mechanical and thermal energy used to compress air. Here, water mist is put into the compression chamber while air is being compressed. Since water can hold much more heat than air, it can harness heat generated using CAES better. Once the pressurized air is released, heated water is re infused enabling the hot air to return more energy.

At present, LightSail is using a high speed compressor prototype, which has shown potential of delivering 100kW of power. According to CEO Steve Crane, at 3,000psi, one kilowatt hour needs a tank of 50 liters. By retaining heat, the system’s efficiency can be increased to 90 percent instead of the usual 60 percent. However, the company is still working to further increase round trip efficiency.

LightSail will be shipping its first product in 2013. To ensure that its system is better able to serve its purpose, the company is looking to maintain affordable prices while at the same time enhancing round trip efficiency.
