Zephyr’s 54 Hours Uninterrupted Flight on Solar Energy

zephyr

Recently Zephyr kept flying for almost 54 hours during its tests. Defence firm of UK, Qinetiq has built this astonishing unmanned vehicle. According to the researchers, it is amazing that a solar powered air craft kept flying for approximately two nights with its own power.

In the year 2001, jet-powered US Air Force Global Hawk also made a record of 30 hours flying. It was a surveillance unmanned aircraft. But, unfortunately 54 hours flight of Zephyr is not entitled for any record books, as FAI or world air sports federation was not informed regarding such a test.

Representatives of FAI were informed regarding the 33 hours second flight, which has strong possibilities of getting into the official record. On the other hand, development team of Zephyr is unperturbed with the results and strongly believes the 54 hours flights to be a record breaker.

Recently, technical director and pilot of Zephyr made a statement to BBC News website in which he stated that, ‘This aeroplane is going to go a lot higher and a lot further. You ain’t seen nothing yet.’
