Eco Factor: Zero-energy marine terminal concept powered by solar and wind energy.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics has unveiled the designs of its futuristic marine terminal that will be powered by renewable solar and wind energy. Dubbed Castor Green Terminal, the facility reflects the link between water and land and includes a terminal and vehicle processing center, which will handle products such as automotive, agricultural, construction and other rolling equipment.

The design envisions a more environmentally friendly future of land and sea logistics operations. The energy used to handle each unit of cargo will be reduced by as much as 80 percent. Though wind turbines will be the primary energy generators at the facility, solar photovoltaic roof panels have also been included to meet energy demands.

Apart from being self-sufficient in terms of energy, the terminal will also be self-sufficient for all its water needs. Rainwater will be collected by the roof of the terminal and will be stored in underground tanks before being reclaimed. Energy usage will be minimized by using wind for cooling and sunlight for heating. Moreover, smart lighting sensors will ensure maximum efficient use of electricity.

The location of the Castor Green Terminal will be based on detailed environmental studies of the local area, including potential impact on sea life, birds and animals. The terminal is intended to be sited close to good rail and road links and barge services to make sure that distances to main markets and manufacturing facilities will be relatively short.
