UK’s leading Smith of Derby who has a history of repairing and restoring ancient clocks for more than 150 years now, have designed the world’s largest solar clock for The Baghdad University in Iraq as a part of their restoration plan which as an iconic symbol will rest on the newly redeveloped University.
Still in its completion mode, the solar powered clock is expected to be 40m in height and 3.5m in diameter featuring four dials and backlit lighting. Everything in this clock tower like power, lighting, and also the bell sound system will depend on nature. This is truly going to be an eco friendly product that will be powered by solar panels incorporated in the building itself. The modular format of the clock will help in hassle-free installation and easy maintenance.
This Beacon clock has been previously designed for various other countries having very limited access to energy resources, and to our surprise it notifies the time convincingly by utilizing wind or sun energy to channelize its systems. Similarly, we can hope that the Bagdad clock would tell the time pretty fine once it is installed later this year. And why just time, this solar clock which would also be known as the community heartbeat according to Smith of Derby, would also demonstrate the power of nature to evaluate the tough environmental and economic crisis sustainably.
