While the world still debates over how necessary biofuel really is and if we need to stop spending any more time and money developing new biofuel, there is no debating the fact that hydrogen-producing fuel cells are the ultimate solution to the existing power crisis. If we can indeed produce hydrogen by splitting water in a safe and commercially viable process then all our energy needs might be fulfilled with ease and with no emission of carbon gases. Hence any vehicle powered by fuel cells becomes a priceless asset to the planet, and now Germany has just added one such jewel to the eco crown.

The world saw for the first time a completely fuel-cell powered passenger boat in Hamburg, Germany, this Friday and it was apparently a real treat. The FCS Alsterwasser, as the boat is known, is powered by twin fuel-cell motors similar to those already in use in the Germany Navy’s most modern submarines. It can accommodate 100 passengers on lake cruises in the city of Hamburg.

The technology is pretty simple on the face of it as the boat burns hydrogen to give heat and light (power) to the engine. This method of propulsion is completely emission-free. It would be interesting, though, to find out how the hydrogen was extracted in its pure form and how much energy was consumed in that process, and the carbon footprint that it leaves behind. Nevertheless, it is still a positive step toward the future.
