World record: Indian State Plants 3 Million Saplings in 11 Hours for Biodiesel Feedstock

Creating world record, it took just 11 hours! The government of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh government claimed to have done this, within this little time, by planting at least three million saplings of Jatropha and Karanj!

IT took the joint effort of thousands of volunteers of the National Cader Corps (NCC), schoolchildren, village representatives, teachers and officials to carry on this plantation drive. It is done in Chief Minister Raman Singh’s all four blocks of the home district Kawardha. The area comprises of 3,958 sq km (1,528 sq mi).

The Chief Minister himself is using jatropha bio-fuel for powering his official vehicle since May 2005. He told a farmer- gathering at Ramhepur,

The state government has launched the mega jatropha plantations drive with the sole objective to make India an energy-secure country by 2015.
