World Cup organizers plan green

world cup soccer 2006With the whole world on fire by the World Cup Soccer that was kicked off in Germany last Friday, millions of soccer fans visiting the country would surely prove injurious for the environment.

But the organizers hope the games to score an important goal for the environment. Though this is pretty challenging, they seem to do away with their goals. After deciding on promoting public transportation usage and rainwater-usage for water the soccer fields, they have decided planned to finance some climate projects.

The transportation, construction, and maintenance of the 12 World Cup stadiums along with the presence of 3.2 million spectators are expected to generate more than 110,000 tons of carbon dioxide and other gases.

To offset the heat-trapping greenhouse gases, the cup organizers plan to finance climate projects, which includes planting of forests in far-away places soak up carbon as they grow. The far-off places include India and South Africa.

Thomas Hackbarth, a spokesperson for the games said,

We are confident that this will be the greenest World Cup ever… We aim to neutralize all effects of World Cup travel, the construction of the stadiums, and the hotel overnights, including [the] heating of water.
