We have seen various luxurious eco friendly cars but here comes the new Volkswagen NILS sports car concept that has been designed to offer dynamic performance of a sports car along with luxury. Petite but powerful structure of Volkswagen NILS was designed at Volkswagen Design Center in Potsdam, Berlin in collaboration with German Federal Ministry of transport, building and urban development.
The center’s director, designer Thomas Ingenlath said:
“NILS was designed to make a visual statement and transport a vision of the automotive future to the present. I am especially pleased that we managed to implement the concept of the two glass wing doors. This allowed us to create large transparent surfaces and simultaneously to make entering and exiting the vehicle very comfortable, even in the most cramped of parking spaces.”
Formula 1 race cars served as the source of inspiration for Volkswagen NILS, with the engine in back, the driver in middle, RWD transmission, and free-standing outboard wheels. Its aluminum made body frame makes it a lightweight vehicle weighing just around 1,014lbs (460kgs) and therefore it doesn’t need big electric motor to move it. 15KW to 25KW electric motor is quite efficient to run this mini sports car. A compact lithium- ion battery fitted behind the driver seat is the source of energy for this car. However, its top speed of 80mph doesn’t even get it in the list of top sports car territory. It takes almost 11 seconds to get speed up to 62mph which makes its acceleration more lethargic. But still it’s the best in its category keeping in mind all the important factors like environment, economical sustainability, luxury, compactness and likewise.
