Vertical Village lets you enjoy village living at reduced building footprint

Vertical VillageEvolution of mankind from an embryo seems to become a source of idea for future architectural homes. D3 Housing Tomorrow 2011 Competition invited conceptual ideas from across the globe. The competition was based on innovative solutions with advanced sustainable thought and social interaction by intrinsic environmental geometries, social behaviors, urban implications, and programmatic flows. The winner of this global contest was an architectural and scientific model of a sustainable living space challenging to transform the existing image of a traditional village.

Conceptualized and developed by Yushang Zhang, Rajiv Sewtahal, Riemer Postma and Qianqian Cai, this winning idea “The Vertical Village: A Sustainable Way of Village-style Living” had in itself all the ingredients essential for future sustainable living concept of an ideal village. Taking cell as a concept of housing after analyzing the good and bad of urban skyscrapers and village land occupying set-ups, a vertical 3D plot division was framed to resolve downsizing effects of the existing spatial structure. These divisions are based on 3D Voronoi algorithmic system and have been systematically defined and dived in an orthogonal structure. Look of a cross cell connection in a vertical form gives it a modern science geometrical model.

Though, at first instance, it resembles any other modern architectural building stacking floor after floor but the details in it leaves one stunned. There’s a whole new world of modern village inside this cell module of vertical building. The 3D structure with orthogonal connections to its nearer point gives the cell to have large surface perpendicular or parallel to the horizon. Each cell domain in this vertical village symbolizes a home for a family except few reserved for public utility. The orthogonal surfaces in a cell can be used for kitchen, study or bedding and the other irregular surfaces can be used for gardening or leisure. Each cell domain is well connected to each other and yet distinct from a conventional stacking buildings due to its unique collaboration technique. Larger spaces for public movement, leisure and commercials are kept within this village enabling all activities under one big umbrella.

This innovative futuristic design of a vertical community at large aims at changing the current perspective of collective living. A village to its name certainly means simple, natural and calm living with a hope that all other requirements needed for a comfortable and private space are also equally considered in this community vision and can be practically implemented in years to come.
