AS+GG design the world’s fourth tallest building for China

Wuhan Greenland Center

Very soon, after UAE, Toronto and Malaysia, China will also be in a position to boast about having some of the tallest buildings gracing its skyline. Wuhan Greenland Center is going to be world’s fourth tallest building. Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill Architecture, a respected name in the global architect community, has finally disclosed the design of the building. The main objective behind creating such a gigantic building is to accommodate the ever increasing population of China and meet the space needs of the country.

The length of the tower is around 2000 feet and is beautifully designed building with an emphasis on strength and resistance. The building is a tapered structure and has round corners and a dome at the top. The purpose behind this particular design was to make the building safe from wind resistance and vortex action. The architects have also managed to give special attention on reducing the building’s energy requirements and carbon emissions.

The building has more than a hundred floors and has 3,230,000 sq ft as floor space. Out of this floor space 2,153,000 sq ft is meant for offices, 538,200 sq ft for apartments, a five star hotel and a club house put together. To support such a huge structure the foundation of building has been made in the form of a tripod. In the entire curtain wall, thousands of holes have been made which will help in let go the wind pressure. These apertures will also function as window washing system and air exhaust system.

The architects have made special provisions for recycling and reuse of all forms of valuable resources like water and energy. A huge enthalpy wheel will be installed in the ventilation system which will grab energy from exhaust systems for the purpose of pre-heating or pre-cooling the air entering the building. Daylight responsive control system will also be included in the building along with a high efficiency lighting system to meet the energy needs in an efficient manner.

In the same way, for saving and reusing water, a used water recovery system will be installed which will pick up water from the laundry and the sinks and bathrooms and will reuse it for the building’s cooling system. Besides, water efficient appurtenance will minimize water usage and reduce the energy requirements for pumping water. It is expected that construction will begin this year and the building will be completed in about 5 years. Once built, the building will be third tallest tower in China and fourth tallest in world.
