Every country in its own little way is trying to save energy by using eco-friendly products. With a launch of eco-friendly bicycle rental service, Paris has also joined the race. This service is known as Velib’, a combination of the words velo (bike) and liberte (liberty).
It is an initiative pushed by Socialist Mayor Bertrand Delanoe, who has made fighting traffic and pollution his No. 1 goal. The new scheme includes 10,600 bicycles which will be made available for rental across the city. You can rent a bike to get around town from rental stations that appear every 330 yards. There are day, weekly, and yearly passes
Parisians and tourists will able to use swipe or credit-cards 24 hours a day to rent cycles for short trips around the city, dropping them at 750 bike points in the capital.
The first half-hour after users pick up a bike is always free, with an extra euro tacked on for the first additional half-hour, two euros for the second and four euros for every extra half-hour from then on.
A yearlong pass costs 29 euros ($39.50), while a one-day pass costs 1 euro, about $1.36 and a seven-day ticket goes for 5 euros ($6.80).
