Wind power and Opera seems to go hand in hand just like spaghetti and meatballs. Recently, the Glyndebourne opera company has been trying to battle all the odds to establish itself as an eco friendly opera. For this, the windmill project has finally been cleared by the authorities. The latest 850Kw turbine is supposed to meet 100% of the energy needs of the opera house.
The project:
The goal of the project is to build a 230 feet high windmill (measure from the ground to the tip of the blade). This will be four times higher than any standard windmill. This will be constructed in the Downs National Park in Sussex.
Perspectives for and against:
Just like anything else, this project faced a lot of opposition from the local people as well. People in opposition argued that this will mess up the local landscape and will destroy the natural beauty of the area. So the opposing party insisted on rejecting the applications.
Lewes planning officers had recommended the application be turned down, believing it would cause serious harm to the natural beauty, character and tranquility of the Sussex Downs and the proposed South Downs National Park
However, the exec. Chairman of Glyndebourne Productions Guss Christie is excited:
We are delighted that Glyndebourne’s application to build a wind turbine, to supply the opera house with renewable energy, has been given the go-ahead by Lewes District Council.
Final standing:
The opera company will take this matter to the Whitehall where a decision will be made by Hazel Blears (Local govt. secretary). The debate over this issue involves the two political groups: Conservative councilors and Liberal democrats. Conservative groups were obviously against the plan whereas the liberal members were for it.
The funny thing is what some Britons (specially the ones in opposition) fail to realize is the fact that this project is eco friendly and is not harmful to the environment. I think this is way better than any other power generators using oil, gas, etc.
Personally, I know this is probably the cleanest and renewable energy resource. It’s weird that the opposition hasn’t understood this point yet. As a matter of fact, generation of electricity through renewable energy source is a great idea.
