Eco Factor: UV flashlight helps detect hard to spot oil on the beach.

In the end it’s all about breaking inhibitions and at least give a try to what has never been done before. In this case it’s about a simple test widely used to detect oil using UV flashlight under lab conditions alone. One particular geologist Rip Kirby decided to conduct a similar test on a beach to detect oil pollution and was simply left amazed by the results.

He found that under UV light, clean sand appears purple or black which would make it easier to detect hard to spot oil, such as the one mixed with sand, mud or even light stains on the sand washed ashore. Rip’s timimng couldn’t have been better with hundreds slogging day and night to restore beaches following sinking of the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig.
