Unmanned ice cap stations to measure Greenland’s thinning ice cap

How fast is the frozen sheet covering Greenland thinning? To monitor this, Denmark has planned to set up seven measuring stations along Greenland’s vast ice cap the edge – Its unmanned. Environment Minister Connie Hedegaard informed about the plan on Friday.

Hedegaard believes that the stations will provide the world with a much better picture of climate change’s effects in the Arctic. Thus, it will be able to help reveal the consequences of it across the world.

The station will measure precipitation and wind. It will also measure ice pressure at the surface and 30 meter (99 feet) below.

Next year will witness the start of its installation. It will be done by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland around the icy edge of Greenland. And all the stations are expected to be operational by 2010. The project will be costing up to 5.7 million kroner (euro764.600; US$962.000).
