Eco Factor: Kids design water-saving toilet, green bike and recycled Sibling Soaker for a competition.

In an attempt to encourage kids to take up green practices, PBS Design Squad held a competition where children ages 5 to 19 were asked to create the next great eco-friendly invention using nothing but recycled items. The Trash to Treasure competition looked for designs that fit one of the three categories – mobility, conservation or play. The little angels had to use at least two repurposed materials in their design.

14-year-old MaryAnn, who invented a water-saving toilet, was declared the winner, along with Daniel and Lilly. Daniel designed a bike that has space to stash your backpack and features to keep you dry when you’re riding in bad weather, while 12-year-old Lilly came up with the recycled “Sibling Soaker.” All the winners won themselves a trip to Boston and saw their inventions coming to life. Conintuum, a Boston-based company, helped the kids shape their thinking.
