In an effort to reduce the amount of grid electricity being used by their office, Tourism London has unveiled the world’s tallest solar-powered tree structure and three photovoltaic arrays that will be able to generate about 8.6KW of power. The electricity the system generates will provide revenue to pay for the project over the life of the contract.

The Solar Tree project has been designed in the image of the city logo as a visual landmark to highlight the importance of clean, renewable energy. The installation also features three pole-mounted arrays of photovoltaic modules. The unique Solar Tree stands seven meters tall and has 27 leaves, each of which produces renewable electricity.

The entire project will be able to generate about 10,000KWh of renewable electricity each year, which is about half of what the office consumes annually. In addition to generating renewable energy, the system will offset about 10 tons of CO2 per year from coal-fired power plants.
