The safest batteries around

Do you know that only one battery in 100 is being recycled? These small little devices have become a household item. But do we , humans really give a thought about the environmental effects of battery disposal ?

The British Battery Manufacturing Association claims that 98 per cent of primaries (non-rechargeables) are now safe no longer containing heavy metals (such as mercury), the really famous pollutants but its alternative battery, containing zinc oxide, manganese dioxide and potassium hydroxide, pollute too. A good option would therefore be to stick to rechargeables coupled with an ‘intelligent’ charger or a disposable Saitek Eco charger.

But rechargeables also contain 80 per cent nickel cadmium (a known human carcinogen) so avoid careless disposal. Better still; buy nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) instead.

Another good option is The Solio, the only rechargeable battery system with integrated solar-blade technology, compatible with 3G and 4G iPods too. There are also the convenient folding 5-watt solar panels and a Voltaic Systems backpack, which charges as you walk along.
