Eco Factor: Floating turbine uses flow of water to generate renewable energy.
Designed by American designer Michael Jantzen, the Great River Turbine is a conceptual design for a large stainless steel water turbine that can generate pollution-free electricity for a city. With a diameter of about 100ft, the turbine features 12 massive blades that rotate with the current of the river.
The rotating blades activate a powerful generator that produces electricity. The turbine is to be mounted on a specially designed public access moored barge, which funnels a controlled flow of water directly into the curved blades of the turbine.
The barge could be located almost anywhere near the banks of a large river, where it also serves as a tourist attraction. The Great River Turbine was designed to be placed near a large city like St. Louis, along the banks of the Mississippi River, where it could continually generate electricity for the city.
