Eco Factor: New Cape Canaveral Next Generation Clean Energy Center will use about 33 percent less fuel per megawatt of power generated.

The Cape Canaveral Power Plant that has a history of 45 years is just on the verge of green replacement. Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has demolished the power plant and is gearing up to build a new one that will be designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Being erected on the 42-acres site, the new Cape Canaveral Next Generation Clean Energy Center will use about 33 percent less fuel per megawatt of power generated with advanced combined-cycle, natural gas technology capable.

The Clean Energy Center will include solar panels on the roof, which will produce green energy for its electric car recharging station. The three sleeker stacks measuring just about half in height to the original stacks will emit 88 percent fewer air particulates and 50 percent less carbon dioxide without any additional water or land use. Capable of producing 1,250 megawatts of electricity, the new power plant is expected to see a grand opening in 2013.
