Eco Factor: 1972 Beetle transformed to run on a zero-emission electric engine.
At an age when most of us just fantasize about driving cars, Ontario-based Ashton Stark has transformed his grandpa’s 1972 Beetle to run on a clean engine. Stark, who is now 14, has spent one year building the fully operational electric vehicle and is now waiting for a learner’s permit.
The 1972 Super Beetle is now driven with nine separate 8 volt golf cart batteries, with five placed in the rear and four in the front of the vehicle. Churning out 72 volts, the noise-free car can hit a top speed of 45mph and can operate for 50 miles on a single charge, which will cost about 10 cents in electricity costs. The entire transformation process cost around $4000.
