Eco Factor: Grimshaw designs power plant to convert waste into electricity.

Despite many efforts of residents and manufacturers to reduce, reuse and recycle waste, there is always a significant amount of waste that cannot be dealt with in this way. Statistics point out that last year Suffolk produced over 400,000 tons of municipal waste, out of which only 200,000 tons was recycled and the other half went to landfills.

Suffolk County Council is now planning to reduce even more waste by converting it into useful energy with a waste-to-energy power plant. The facility has been designed by Grimshaw for resource management company SITA UK. Designed with Suffolk countryside in mind, the plant will be able to process about 269,000 tons of waste each year to produce enough electricity to power 30,000 homes. In addition to generating electricity, the plant will also help in saving 75,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
