Solo: Let the sun shine on your portable computer!

Solar products are not just green and eco-friendly, but they are also sometimes far more efficient and convenient that the normal stuff that is easily available in the market. Solar power has often been viewed as something that is forced upon the consumer when he has few other options to turn to. But with the way modern engineering and electronics are shaping up, they no longer are just forced products but first choice because of the variety and convenience that they offer and all that at a very green price!

The Solo is an ultra-low power, transportable computer designed to operate from a number of different power sources including solar panels and lead-acid vehicle batteries. Its ultra-low-power design enables it to be used indefinitely away from sources of mains electricity. Solo is a transportable rather than a portable computer. It uses a TFT Liquid Crystal Display, which may optionally be touch sensitive, removing the need for a separate keyboard and mouse. It may be supplied in a variety of configurations and screen sizes depending on the location of the manufacturer and their intended market.

For many rural areas in Third-world countries there is little prospect of individuals owning their own computer. The makers envisage the likely use of Solo computers to be in community centres. There the local population can access digital information on matters such as local planning or voting rights, or send and receive emails which the Centre staff will transfer for them, via a telephone link or even by satellite.

Now the last time I wrote about how a product was useful for ‘Third World Countries’, one of the readers took an exception to it by saying that even the West could use more than its share of green products. So let me tell you that Solo is not only restricted to ‘Third World Nations’, but they could use it better in their remote areas.
