Tapping the young generation’s creativity and intellectual aspect, the Ford Motor Company had commissioned a group of transportation design students at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit to rethink the Model T for the future. Motivated to come up with an ideal Model of the future, the students put themselves in Henry Ford’s shoes, delivering vehicle concepts capable of providing affordable transportation and the social impact on par with the car that started it all. And the wining entry was conceptualized by Dong Tran. Intended to redefine the redefine the automobile as a device that does not simply consume energy but can also supply the same, Dong’s car includes a removable battery pack charged from solar panels on the car that can power devices away from the car.

Inspired by nature, architecture and man-made objects, Tran’s concept took on a functional design approach infused with an efficient and simple surface language. Every form of the vehicle is to have a practical purpose in manufacturing techniques, costs and materials choice. This winner will be displayed at Ford’s world headquarters in Dearborn during September and October.
