A Roman church to commemorate the 2,000th anniversary of Christianity has been designed with a white concrete structure dominated by three soaring “sails.” And, these white sculptural forms are enhanced with a type of cement that essentially cleans itself! Wow! This surely minimizes the need for its maintenance.
The new material has used a compound containing titanium dioxide as a white pigment which has the capability to ‘eat’ the surrounding smog.
The extensive testing of the material is sponsored in part by a European Union research project. This ‘smart’ antipollution material has become a major environment-friendly construction product that contains titanium dioxide — helping to destroy air pollutants found in car exhaust, heating emissions etc.
