Everyone knows that once solar cells are installed they can deliver virtually free energy to the household. If that is so, why aren’t these seen in every household? Simple reason is that these cells are expensive and no one prefers to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to save a few bucks monthly.
If researchers want to see solar cells mass deployed then they will have to alter the technology and make them a bit cheap so that everyone can afford them.
How to make solar cells cheap:
Solar cells available in market today make use of silicon cells that require thick slabs of expensive crystalline silicon. To make solar cells cheap we would have to reduce the amount of silicon used in the cells. For now solar cells have gone slim but their cost has not reduced. Now it’s possible for you to paint your walls with solar cells, this technique is great but even this will not be as cost effective as desired.
Will Solar cells ever get cheap:
Manufacturers know it that once solar cells get cheap their potential market is in trillions of dollars. Moreover, the power of the sun can completely put an end to the energy crisis. Researchers hope that another decade of research on solar cells will make them easy to deploy and easy to own. But that will happen somewhere in the 2020. Till then we would however, be using our beloved dirty energy sources and keep on polluting our environment. We don’t have much time to waste because soon it might get hard to reverse the damage!
