Skydrop: An unusual balloon to collect clean water from the sky

Skydrops

We never know the worth of water till the well is dry. Researchers point out that over 2 billion people in this world don’t have access to safe drinking water, and water being the cause of a number of diseases, there are a large number of fatalities over the world due to dirty water. The concept of Skydrops could help these people, by producing hundreds of liters of potable water from the sky. The Skydrops has been designed by Brazillian designers Murilo Gomes and Guilherme Rodrigues. Skydrops is a balloon, filled with helium, and has the ability to collect clean water from the sky.

In Skydrops, a system is implanted within the balloon which helps in collecting water from the environment. The metal sheets with Peltier cells are chilled due to the energy produced by the turbines. As the wind passes through the metallic sheet, it begins to condense and transform into liquid state. The water is than collected in a reservoir through pipes. The membrane filter purifies the water. This unusual balloon can produce 50 liters of clean water every day. Skydrops can stay aloft and generate water continuously for two months.
