Students of Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering Departments from De La Salle University, Manila have recently developed the Sinag Solar Powered Car. Ford Group Philippines, San Miguel Corporation, SunPower, Ventus, Motolite, Shell and Philippine Airlines actively support this project.

This amazing solar powered car was released on September 1 2007, Pasay City. Sinag Solar Powered Car is also going to take participation in the World Solar challenge to be held on October 21, where other solar powered champions will also join. The World Solar Challenge will test the usage of solar energy, appropriate energy management and balance in speed. This competition is aimed to create a vehicle that can cover 3000 km across Australia, i.e. from Darwin to Adelaide.

Another major prospective of this challenge is to reduce greenhouse gases emissions and support greener environment. Altough, Sinag is the first solar powered car in Philippines, but it shows their immense talent. This 50 kg vehicle has wrapped some great technologies. Technical Team Leader, Rene Fernandes, “The car has three major parts: the mechanical system, the electrical system, and the shell,” He further added, “All of these elements work together to keep the car going.”

In Sinag, 400 solar cells effectively generate 2kw.Electrical system monitors the entire power balancing act. Fernandes stated, “We did a lot of research and used computer models to determine the right shape. We came up with one that’s very aerodynamic, with a 0.1 drag coefficient.”

Sinag assures of clean and green future and is actively supported by Aurora, Cabrera Lavadia and Associates, JWT, Creasia, Merritt Partners, Tuason Racing School, Gochermann Solar Technology, and Stratworks.
